On Sept. 10, 1991, the Senate Judiciary Committee opened hearings on the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court. The proceedings would become a watershed moment in the discussion of sexual harassment when Anita Hill, a law professor who had previously worked under Thomas, came forward with allegations against him.
In 1608, John Smith was elected president of the Jamestown colony council in Virginia.
In 1846, Elias Howe received a patent for his sewing machine.

Tuesday the 12th is the day for the Child Advocacy Center’s 30 for 30 Luncheon at Studio 215 at 215 Williams St. Near Russell in Fayetteville. You’ll hear more about 30 for 30 in today’s Talkback program.
This coming weekend marks the annual Greek Festival at Stes. Helen and Constantine Greek Orthodox Church at 614 Oak Ridge in Fayetteville. Tasty Greek food will be sold and served and colorful cultural highlights will be shared as well….Saturday the 16th 11am to 3pm and Sunday the 17th from noon to 6. Can you say OPA?
Another several days of events celebrating women in the world AND our community will be held at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church – It’s Women’s Week at Lewis Chapel and the FREE events (Fridays includes free food and live music) run Wednesday the 13th, Friday the 15th, Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th. We welcome Candi Bethea and Whitney Shipp to tell us more about Women’s Week at Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist…where they always do every celebration so big and inclusively!

In the next several weeks, we’ll talk extensively with new Fayetteville Police Department Chief Kim Braden. He’s a product of Fayetteville’s Police Department because it’s the only one he’s ever worked for in his 26 years of policing. He’s the first one to say the business of police-work has changed since he began as a rookie officer. We think you’ll enjoy hearing from Chief Braden on Talkback starting next week.
Over the past several weeks and months, we have spoken a lot about how the police process of working with those whose criminal problems are rooted in desperate ways of meeting basic needs for food and rent. Sometimes the offenders are low level drug peddlers trying to finance their own addiction…or a prostitute being controlled by a pimp for life’s basics.
Sgt. Jamal Littlejohn talks to us about how Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD for short) has changed the way he’s done HIS job.

One event happening in Fayetteville THIS Tuesday is the 30 for 30 Luncheon being held in honor and for the benefit if Fayetteville’s Child Advocacy Center…Protecting Children…Stopping Abuse …and providing a place of healing and hope for children caught in the web of abuse. 30 for it’s 30 years of service starting in 1993. And 30 for the $30,000 it’s trying to raise to help itself meet its goals!
New executive director Jacie Landeros and longtime Prevention Coordinator Faith Boehmer joined us to talk about how the principle of more people knowing about the Child Avocacy Center is putting them in position to really grow their efforts.
