Today is Sunday February 11…the 42nd day of the year – with 324 remaining in our leap year of 366 days in 2024.

Today is Super Sunday, so-named because it’s the day – and night – of SuperBowl 58 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49er’s…champions of the 2023-24 American and National Football Conference respectively!  Locally, CBS17 will broadcast this year’s game starting at 6:20pm or so.

Two important segments on Talkback today!  One is a timely reminder to Fayetteville and Cumberland County non-profit organizations who serve a public purpose that the deadline for filing for American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding for the coming fiscal year is close of business (5pm) on February 29th.  We’ll learn more from Tye Vaught, Cumberland County management’s Chief of Staff.  He knows the County’s ARP process backward and forward since he ascended to his present Chief of Staff position from being a management analyst in Cumberland County’s finance department.  That’s coming up!

First, though, we’ll visit educator Kim Molnar, who with her husband, Carl -also an educator, began a business – really a mission – Miller’s Crew (named after their middle son) has grown to become Miller’s Brew – in Fayetteville and reaching across our local area – to teach and train friendly, energetic young people in our area how to flourish occupationally in the service area.

Why this is a special calling for Kim, Carl and their special bunch of teaching assistants committing to this equally noteworthy troop of trainees is the object of the process.  Which is to provide a sometimes marginalized set of young people the gift of focus, purpose and productivity they can apply to help themselves thrive their whole lives long!

First, a few basic facts.  In the United States today, 1 in 36 children is born on the autism spectrum.  These are kids who’ll need help in varying degrees communicating, learning and socializing with others – but can also be intellectually gifted in other ways.  (If you’ve ever seen the Tom Cruise movie ‘Rainman’, you’ve seen just one example of autism.  Every child can be unique.) It’s also estimated that 1 in 300 to 700 babies are born with Down’s Syndrome, which also prevents so-called normal child development.  Understanding how to nurture and increase the development potential of these children has made long strides, as both parenting and teaching techniques have improved with insight and understanding.

Kim Molnar tells us more about her family’s mission of hope….
