Ari Lennox Disheartened After Soul Train Awards Loss: ‘Yea, I’m Hurt’
Dreamville’s first lady Ari Lennox took to Twitter early Monday morning (Nov. 18) to reflect on her debut album, Shea Butter Baby, following a loss during the 2019 Soul Train Awards.
Lennox was nominated for Best Collaboration for her single “Shea Butter Baby” featuring J. Cole, Best R&B/Soul Artist, and Best Album/Mixtape of the year for Shea Butter Baby.Â
However, Chris Brown and Drake won for Best Collaboration, H.E.R. took home the award for Best R&B/Soul Artist, and Lizzo (Cuz I Love You) won for Best Album/Mixtape of the year.
Lennox said that “Shea Butter Baby will always be special.” “I made a soul album for black people. I made my album for black people lol,” Lennox continued.

After Lennox admitted, “Yea, I’m hurt. I’m not built for these things,” she quoted Alfre Woodard from her Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed 2000 cult classic film Love & Basketball that starred Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps.
“It’s just a game, Monica. It’s just a game,” Lennox tweeted. On a brighter note, Lennox also shouted out her friend fellow singer Summer Walker who took home the award for Best New Artist.
“Do y’all know Summer Walker styled me. She blessed me y’all” Lennox tweeted.

Although Lennox was disheartened from not winning a 2019 Soul Train Award, many of her fans sent her encouraging messages on Twitter. Check out some of them below.
Donât let no damn award show thatâs rigged anyway (theyâre all rigged) make you feel like your masterpiece was less than what it was! Cole still hasnât gotten the recognition he deserves but we all know heâs the GOAT

And Iâll still listen to âShea Butter Babyâ on my wash days in my conditioning cap and cook dinner with it playing as I sip on a glass of wine to complete my good days, and amend my shitty ones.

It is special. The people who listened to that album, knows that it was one of the best R&B albums of this year, honestly, it was my favorite album this year. But unfortunately, the best doesnât always win, sometimes itâs the most popular. This is why Cole doesnât win awardsđ€Šđœââïž
