Professional wrestling took some hard hits this past week. Just one day after the loss of the legendary wrestling stalwart Terry Funk, WWE’s Chief Content Officer Triple H took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the sudden and tragic death of Windham Rotunda, better known to WWE fans as Bray Wyatt.

This news took many fans by surprise, myself among them. As reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Rotunda died of a heart attack after a long recovery from COVID earlier this year. He was 36 years old.

Windham was one of the most unique and captivating performers in the history of WWE. As a third generation wrestling superstar, Windham was given the tall task of carving his own legacy without relying on his family name. And MAN did he ever. While he had spent the first couple years of his WWE career trying out various gimmicks and characters, he finally found his stride as the sinister bayou cult leader Bray Wyatt.

Bray was a force to be reckoned with right from the start. He’d slowly saunter to the ring with the arena caked in darkness, lighting the way with his lantern. And once he was in the ring and a mic was in his hands, that’s when the real fun began. Bray had an indescribable aura that drew you in immediately, and his promos had you hanging on to his every word.

I was drawn to the Bray Wyatt gimmick immediately, and that was 100% due to Windham’s commitment to his character. He exuded mystique in every word and movement, and completely lost himself in the role. It’s a level of dedication and creativity that sets the best apart from the rest. I was completely devastated by the news of Windham’s passing, and I’m just a fan. I can’t imagine the pain his family and friends must be going through.

So to celebrate the life and legacy of Bray Wyatt, I’m going to look at his most memorable, most awe-inspiring moments in WWE:

• Bray Wyatt's Introduction to WWE

  “Hey, you want to see something really scary?”

  I still vividly remember seeing this vignette for the first time. It was so different from anything WWE was doing at the time, to the point that I wasn’t even sure if this was part of their programming at first. You learn everything you need to know about Bray Wyatt in this short but impactful introduction. He was a dangerously charismatic cult leader from the Louisiana swamp woods, whose message spoke to the downtrodden and forgotten members of society. Backed up by his two most devoted followers Erick Rowan and Luke Harper (the latter of whom also tragically passed away in late 2020), it was concerningly evident that Bray Wyatt was coming to make an impact.

• The Tale of Sister Abigail

  One of the most mysterious components of the Bray Wyatt character was his constant reverence to Sister Abigail. She was a maternal figure from his childhood whose early influence corrupted Bray, setting him on the path to darkness and evil. “She taught me from a young age…’you gotta get them before they get you. Their rattlesnake skin is the same color of the leaves,’ she said.” This one line encapsulates so much of Bray’s persona and explains his motivations all too clearly. The fact that Windham thought to introduce this extra layer of lore into the tale of Bray Wyatt really spoke to his level of understanding with his character.

• Bray Wins Championship Gold

  After years of toiling in WWE’s midcard, the Eater of Worlds finally reached main event status in 2017 when he won the WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber. It was something Wyatt fans (affectionately nicknamed his “fireflies”) were clamoring for since his debut just four years prior. Watching Bray finally reach the top of the company on this night gave me chills, and is a moment I will definitely be rewatching ad nauseam this weekend.

• The Fiend Haunts WWE

  When Bray Wyatt returned from an extended hiatus from the company in early 2019, fans were surprised by a seemingly new character altogether. Bray was now…the host of a children’s TV show? The Firefly Fun House started out innocently enough, but the longer it went on the more off-putting it became. This all culminated in the reveal that Bray’s new lighthearted kid-friendly attitude was merely a front for something much more sinister than anything we’d seen of him before. And at that year’s SummerSlam, Bray introduced us to his demonic alter ego: The Fiend.

  Donning new attire complete with a mask that’s straight up nightmare fuel, The Fiend was a total overhaul of the Bray Wyatt of old. Bray was scary. The Fiend was TERRIFYING. Switching up a wrestling gimmick can be a risky venture, and some aren’t able to make it stick. But if there’s anyone who was a pro at reinvention, it was Bray. This is a moment that will last as one of the greatest character transformations in wrestling history.

• The Firefly Fun House Match

  When WWE was forced to adjust WrestleMania plans in response to the COVID outbreak of 2020, they sought to make up for it by experimenting with more cinematic forms of storytelling. This led to arguably Bray’s best “match” during his entire run in the company: the Firefly Fun House Match against John Cena.

  There’s not much I can say that will do this match any justice, so it’s best you just watch and enjoy for yourself.

• Bray's Heartfelt Return

  Over a year after his release from the company, Bray Wyatt returned in October of 2022 to a roar of approval from the Extreme Rules audience. It was clear that the WWE Universe had missed the haunting and illuminating superstar. On the following episode of SmackDown, Bray came down to the ring and proceeded to speak straight from the heart. Gone was the supernatural cult leader, gone was the Eater of Worlds, gone was The Fiend. It was just a man emotionally expressing sincere gratitude and thankfulness for his fans.

  But of course it wouldn’t be a Bray Wyatt promo without just a teensy bit of world-building. A mysterious figure emerged on the tron while Bray spoke, ominously stating, “you got no idea who you’re dealing with, do you? But you will.”

  Narrative stuff notwithstanding, I feel that Bray’s promo that night was 100% genuine, only made more somber with the news of his deeply tragic passing.

• The Legacy of Bray Wyatt

  Bray Wyatt’s impact in the world of pro wrestling can not be overstated. He was a solid in-ring competitor, but it was his character work that really shined through and endeared him to fans. The care and attention to detail Windham Rotunda put into crafting such an unforgettable character is as otherworldly as Bray Wyatt himself. He will be missed by his friends, family, and fireflies around the world. Rest in Peace, Bray.
