The N.C. Department of Transportation's Rail Division announced that NC By Train will run a train from Raleigh to Rockingham Speedway on April 4 for a NASCAR event. This marks the second year the state's passenger rail program has offered this service.

"After receiving positive feedback from last year's event-day train service, we're excited to bring this unique travel experience back," said NCDOT Rail Division Director Jason Orthne. He thanked CSX, Amtrak, and Track Enterprises for their support.

The program drew inspiration from the "Open Express," which carried passengers from the Triangle to the U.S. Open golf tournament in Pinehurst over four days in June 2024. Those trains sold out. Last year's NASCAR train proved successful too, according to Bob Sargent, president of Track Enterprises.

"Amtrak is pleased to once again partner with NC By Train to support safe, convenient travel for fans heading to Rockingham," said Amtrak Vice President of Planning & State Partnerships Nicole Bucich. "We're proud to help make major events more accessible."

Sargent said the location creates an advantage. "We're fortunate to have NC By Train passenger rail tracks adjacent to the speedway," he said in a statement. "This is a one-of-a-kind travel solution and helps take some of the guesswork and effort out of the planning for our fans."

The morning departure leaves Raleigh Union Station at 7:50 a.m. Stops in Cary and Southern Pines follow at 8:05 a.m. and 9:18 a.m. The train arrives at the facility just before 10 a.m. and drops passengers off near Gate E.

The evening departure leaves at 6:35 p.m. with stops in Southern Pines at 7:16 p.m. and Cary at 8:29 p.m. The service gets back to Raleigh a little after 8:40 p.m.

Tickets cost $25 each way. They must be bought in advance at www.amtrak.com/promotions/rockingham. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers should type or select "Rockingham" for their destination and return trip.

Food and beverages, including beer, wine, and liquor, will be available on board. The trains have large seats, charging outlets at each seat, and free Wi-Fi.
