The N.C. Department of Transportation is accepting applications from organizations statewide to get free bicycle helmets for children. The program runs through Feb. 20. It aims to promote safe bicycling and reduce head injuries among young riders.

Organizations can apply for 25, 50, 75, or 100 helmets through the Bicycle Helmet Initiative webpage. Local government agencies, schools, nonprofit groups, public health organizations, and churches can participate.

Applications opened Jan. 26 and must be submitted online by Feb. 20. Helmets will be handed out in the spring, timed ahead of National Bike & Roll to School Day in May.

"Wearing a helmet is an easy way to reduce the risk of head injuries when riding a bicycle," said Brennon Fuqua, director of the Integrated Mobility Division, according to NCDOT, per hoodline.com.

The Integrated Mobility Division runs the program. It partners with local organizations to distribute helmets to children in need. Partnering with other agencies within the community is encouraged and will strengthen applications.

The Bike Helmet Initiative began in 2007. It works with communities across North Carolina to promote bicycle safety. Over the past five years, the program has given out over 85,000 free bike helmets statewide.

Funding comes from sales of the N.C. "Share the Road" specialty license plate. The Integrated Mobility Division at NCDOT also engages in other projects and safety initiatives.

The timing of the distribution aims for maximum impact and awareness before National Bike & Roll to School Day. This strategic placement helps make sure children have proper safety gear before the May event.
