County officials gave the green light Monday to back SteelFab Inc. with a $363,550 grant. The funds will support a $22 million plant growth plan in Fayetteville, adding 42 jobs.

The plan will grow the current Country Club Drive site, which runs with 58 staff members. New workers will take home $60,000 to $80,000 yearly, hitting an average of $66,700. The project carries the code name "Project Superman."

"This would develop a 75-acre undeveloped tract, add an additional 42 full-time employees, with an average salary around $66,700," said Robert Van Geons, president and CEO of the Fayetteville Cumberland County Economic Development Corp, to county commissioners.

The money adds to Fayetteville City Council's earlier pledge of $327,487 from September 22. Combined local backing now stands at $691,000. Plans show the new site will rise on Shaw Mill Road near current operations.

Van Geons shared that the city faces stiff competition from Virginia and South Carolina, according to CityView. The company will pick its spot within three months.

The money flows over five years, tied strictly to property tax payments. Van Geons stressed the point: "Each year, they must perform in order to receive the incentive."

In late 2021, SteelFab bought the local spot from Hercules Steel (a company with roots back to 1954). This move pushed SteelFab's reach across the nation, now running 15 production sites and 17 offices in 13 states.
