Is Fayetteville Getting Snow Or Not? Well… It’s Complicated
Winter weather is coming today, but what that looks like remains to be seen as Cumberland County (as always) is right on the edge of a rain, sleet, snow mixture line.
As of 8:30 a.m., the latest models show that precipitation will make it to the entire area, but the timing of that arrival will impact what that precipitation looks like.
The National Weather Service Raleigh has Cumberland County under a Winter Weather Advisory starting at 1 p.m. Areas to the north and to the west will be under a Winter Storm Warning. The difference is essentially in what that precipitation is going to look like.
In the Winter Storm Warning region, the National Weather Services says “Heavy snow expected, mixed with sleet at times tonight. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 2 and 4 inches. A light glaze of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will also be possible before precipitation tapers off Saturday morning.”
But in the Winter Weather Advisory zone – which includes Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Spring Lake and areas east – NWS says “Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to one-half inch and ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch.”
So, will we get snow today? It’s still a gray area apparently. But one this is for sure, it’s going to be cold, and it’s going to be wet. That means it will freeze.
Because of the temperatures and weather conditions, Cumberland County has also activated White Flag Shelters and Warming Centers. The list of available locations is here.
Listen to this station all day today for more coverage as the storm progresses.
