Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Slammed as ‘Eco-hypocrites’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are being branded as “eco-hypocrites” after reportedly flying to Katy Perry’s Las Vegas concert in a private jet. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have both been avid supporters of campaigning for climate change. Despite those public views, the parents of two boarded a jet owned by oil heir Michael Herd for their trip to see the “California Gurl,” according to the Sun. The exiled royals took the 40-minute flight to see Perry’s final show of her Las Vegas residency at Resorts World Theatre.
Their not-so-eco-friendly travel methods have sparked harsh criticism by royal experts. The Sussexes strongly encourage the public to work on lowering their carbon emissions. However, as critics point out, they don’t apply the same rules to themselves. Talk TV host Kevin O’Sullivan said on Monday (November 6), “Saving the planet one Katy Perry concert at a time!” Royal expert and biographer Angela Levin told the show that the couple thinks they’ve “gotten so grand, they wouldn’t dream of taking a normal flight” because of all their “rich friends” that pay for it. She adds, “It’s worse than: ‘Do as I say, not as I do,’ because he’s a patron of a charity. This sort of behavior is exactly why we call them eco-hypocrites.”
Per the New York Post, the Gulfstream jet Harry and Meghan reportedly flew on reportedly emits about two tons of CO2 per hour. Under the Paris Agreement, a person’s annual carbon budget should be limited to 2.1 tons per year. Also aboard the flight from Santa Barbara were Cameron Diaz and her husband, Benji Madden, Zoe Saldana, and billionaire and Bumble dating app founder Whitney Wolfe Herd and her husband.
This isn’t the first time the Sussexes have sparked outrage over their trips. Last year, Harry warned the United Nations about the growing perils of climate change, saying that “our world is on fire again.” Then, just last month, Harry and Meghan flew private jet for a romantic getaway to St. Vincent and the Grenadines just days after speaking about climate change. In another trip last year, the couple flew from England to Santa Barbara via jet, with emissions nearing 60 tons of CO2. And in 2021, Harry took a private jet home from his charity polo event in Aspen rather than the two-hour commercial flight home.
