Katy Perry’s ‘Awkward’ Song Choice At Coronation Concert
Katy Perry performs on stage during the Coronation Concert on May 07, 2023 in Windsor, England. The Windsor Castle Concert is part of the celebrations of the Coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the other Commonwealth realms that took place at Westminster Abbey yesterday. Performers include Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Paloma Faith, Olly Murs, Andrea Bocelli and Sir Bryn Terfel, Alexis Ffrench, Lang Lang & Nicole Scherzinger, Bette Midler, Tiwa Savage, Steve Winwood, Pete Tong and The Coronation Choir.
Katy Perry was across the pond this weekend to attend and perform at King Charles III’s coronation event at Windsor Castle. The singer wore a foil-like bronzed Vivienne Westwood gown while she belted out two of her classic hits, “Roar” and “Katy Perry performing “Firework” at King Charles’ Coronation concert. pic.twitter.com/4Jn9QG3LIV

While viewers enjoyed Perry’s performance, there was one moment in her short set which raised some eyebrows from her English crowd. In “Firework,” Perry sings the line: “You just gotta ignite the light. And let it shine. Just own the night, like the Fourth of July.” Funnily enough, BBC only posted her “Roar” performance on their verified YouTube channel. Folks on Twitter found her choice of song to be ironic and hilarious since it references Americans’ Independence Day from the British in 1776.

Another Is it my imagination, or did Katy Perry suddenly realize in the middle of her song how strange it is that she’s celebrating the coronation of the King of England with a song which highlights our holiday celebrating our independence from the same monarchy?
She stops right there…
