Madonna speaks onstage during the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards at Barclays Center on September 12, 2021 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Pope Francis rides his Pope mobile through a crowd of pilgrims before holding an open-air mass on September 15, 2021 in Sastin, Slovakia. Today's mass concludes an apostolic trip by the Pope to Central Europe from September 12 to 15. The Pontiff visited five cities, starting with Budapest, Hungary, for the closing mass of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress, continuing with the Slovak capital Bratislava, and visiting Kosice, Presov and Sastin. Only fully vaccinated and a limited number of tested worshippers have been allowed to attend public gatherings on this occasion.

Madonna wants to meet with Pope Francis, following her condemnation from the Catholic Church for her “blasphemous” behavior.

The singer’s 1989 music video for the song “Like a Prayer” featured burning crosses and an erotic depiction of Jesus. Per The Independent, it was banned by the Vatican, with Italian Roman Catholic historian Roberto de Mattei saying at the time: “The video is a blasphemy and insult because it shows immorals inside a church.”

Pope John Paul II, who was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 1978 until his death in 2005 also encouraged fans to boycott Madonna in Italy and not attend her Blond Ambition tour.

In a tweet on Thursday (May 5), Madonna tagged the head of the Catholic Church, writing: “Hello @Pontifex Francis – I’m a good Catholic. I Swear! I mean I don’t Swear! It’s been a few decades since my last confession. Would it be possible to meet up one day to discuss some important matters? I’ve been excommunicated 3 times. It doesn’t seem fair. Sincerely Madonna.”

Madonna also came under fire for staging a mock crucifixion during a concert in Rome in 2006, leading to Cardinal Ersilio Tonino, speaking with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI, saying, “This time the limits have really been pushed too far. This concert is a blasphemous challenge to the faith and a profanation of the cross. She should be excommunicated.”
