Disney+ Pulls Several Classic Movies From Children Profiles Over Negative Stereotypes
Disney+ has announced that they have pulled several classic movies from children’s profiles because they have negative stereotypes in them.
On their website, they explain that several favorites, like Peter Pan, Dumbo, The Aristocats, and Swiss Family Robinson, cannot be viewed because “Titles with a content advisory notice related to negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures have been excluded.”
Adult profiles can still access these titles.
On the brand’s Story Matters website, they explain that the movies will now have an advisory warning before they can be viewed. It reads, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.”
Disney also highlights what parts in each movie brought on the warning. For example, they detail what negative stereotypes are in Dumbo.
They state, “The crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations. The leader of the group in Dumbo is Jim Crow, which shares the name of laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. In ‘The Song of the Roustabouts,’ faceless Black workers toil away to offensive lyrics like ‘When we get our pay, we throw our money all away.'”
