James Cameron Basically Says “Get Over It” On Jack’s ‘Titanic’ Death
HOW DARE YOU, JAMES.
First of all, ‘Titanic’ caused me to have the most insane obsession with the ship as a kid, so for me, the movie was something that was a staple in cinema. (I probably was not old enough to be watching it IMO, but besides that… #paintmelikeoneofyourfrenchgirls)
During James Cameron‘s most recent interview with ‘Vanity Fair,’ he goes in on fans that are still “never letting go” of Jack’s death.
“And the answer is very simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies…Very simple. . . . Obviously it was an artistic choice, the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him.”
You WOULD think that was artistic, JAMES.
Of course, he’s referring to the fan obsession that Jack and Rose could have fit on the floating door, and instead, he let Rose live, while he sunk into the abyss.
He also calls the obsession of his death “all kind of silly,” and that it was totally on purpose to hurt fans that were attached to him see him die. Which honestly, if you think about it, probably created the storm of all of the deaths you see in cinema or TV today. I mean, I have to wonder if George R.R. Martin was a huge ‘Titanic’ fan since he basically kills everyone you get attached to.
“Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless. . . . The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons,” says Cameron.
Regardless of the artistic reasoning, we still will never let go of this. Especially with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio still being BFF’s after all this time. I guess you could say that our hearts will go on.
