While social media can be super entertaining and an excellent way to waste time, it can also be incredibly draining, even for "normal" people.

Imagining using it when you're a celebrity? Sure, you get tons of compliments from fans, but then you're also dealing with comment after comment from random Internet trolls who just want to make you feel bad. It's no surprise, then, that a number of celebrities have made it a point to take a social media hiatus. Here are some of the most notable celebrity social media breaks:

Kanye West

Earlier this year, Kanye pressed pause on both his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Though he's been known to say some provocative things on Twitter, reps for the rapper claim there was no drama behind the brief hiatus.

Selena Gomez

Shortly after becoming the most followed person on Instagram, Selena stepped away from the spotlight as she took a social media break, citing the need to focus on her mental health. In an interview, she explained, "As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like sh*t when I look at Instagram."

Aaron Carter

Aaron Carter has had a tough few months. From his DUI arrest to his breakup with long-time girlfriend Madison Parker, it hasn't been easy, and he's taken a lot of heat about his choices from social media users. He briefly declared a hiatus from Twitter to escape the negativity, but returned on August 14th, explaining that "I'm not gonna let the trolls get the best of me."

Solange

Though she remains on Instagram, singer-songwriter Solange deleted her Twitter account after the violence that broke out in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Kim Kardashian West

Following her terrifying Paris robbery, the reality star disappeared from the social media platforms she normally frequented multiple times per day. When she eventually returned a month later, it was to post a much more understated shot than we're used to seeing from the glammed up star.

Zayn

After his breakup with Perrie Edwards (yes, there was a time before Zayn and Gigi) the singer stepped away from social media.

We can't imagine what it's like to be bombarded with critiques, praise, and weird comments from thousands upon thousands of people every second of every day. If we were these celebs, we'd probably end up taking a social media hiatus too.
